Bruce Benson is a Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting and is based in New York. Mr. Benson is a member of the Telecom, Media and Technology practice and leads the Digital Media practice. He has more than 25 years of professional experience in all aspects of media and technology. He has consulted in a broad range of areas including strategy and market planning, economic analysis, operational effectiveness, brand management, consumer engagement, intellectual property management and digital transformation.
Mr. Benson is a recognized expert in media and has helped some of the world’s leading companies achieve their strategic goals, including Sony Music, Microsoft, Bertelsmann, Viacom, Young & Rubicam, Ogilvy, Harper Collins, NBC and Pearson. Mr. Benson has led over 200 projects with clients and as a media executive both in the U.S. and overseas. These projects have focused on strategic planning, revenue optimization, operational effectiveness and cost containment, internet distribution and large-scale IT project management.
Recently, Mr. Benson led the financial turnaround of a large magazine company, including the redesign of its sales functions nationally. In the past two years he has co-led performance improvement projects at Gray Television and Young Broadcasting, as well as helped manage the launch planning of Al Jazeera America, including studio production and post-production. Mr. Benson has designed production accountings systems for Viacom and Sony Music and has performed due diligence on production spending at RHI Entertainment and Lionsgate.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Benson was leader of Price Waterhouse’s Media practice in New York.
Mr. Benson served as Chairman of the Board of Ziff Davis Media until its recent sale. His previous background includes Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Young & Rubicam, Chief Executive Officer of a leading digital advertising delivery firm, Senior Vice president at Sony Music and Managing Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Entertainment practice in New York.
Mr. Benson acted as an expert witness on behalf of the RIAA in the historical rate-setting case which set the song-writer royalty rate for digital downloads where he opined on the financial aspects of the digital music industry.
Mr. Benson is a frequent key note speaker and author of many articles on digital strategy and media, and co-led conferences with key Harvard strategists on intellectual property management and copyright law. He was recently appointed as an “industry luminary” to Adobe’s product strategy board. Mr. Benson co-led the EW Scripps project, for which FTI Consulting was named winner of the Consulting Strategy award for 2012 by the Association of Management Consulting Firms.
