Paul Bakker is a Managing Director at FTI Consulting and is based in The Hague. Paul is a tax advisor specializing in Indirect Taxation and is a Member of FTI Consulting’s Global VAT Compliance practice in the Corporate Finance segment. Paul has a special focus on VAT and international trade and customs. Paul is responsible for the foreign VAT refund practice of FTI Global VAT Compliance where he identifies VAT refund opportunities in the EU for mainly US businesses.
Paul has been advising national and international companies for over 15 years on indirect tax and procedural tax-related matters, including vehicle registration tax, excise duties and gaming tax. He practices in several indirect tax fields focusing on financial services, energy, consumer business and VAT compliance technology. Paul also has vast experience in coordinating global and European projects on the VAT treatment of activities in different jurisdictions.
In addition to advising clients, Paul litigates on behalf of companies in civil and tax matters brought before the Dutch courts and assists clients with voluntary disclosures. He is a member of the Dutch Association of Tax Lawyers (NOB) and teaches tax litigation (Moot Court) at University of Leiden. He publishes articles monthly in the VAT technical magazine BTW Bulletin of Kluwer Publishers.
Paul started working at the Indirect Tax Department of Arthur Andersen in Amsterdam in 1998, and following a transaction between Deloitte and Andersen in 2002 he joined the Indirect Tax team of Deloitte in Amsterdam. Paul was Deloitte’s Global Indirect Tax Coordinator from 2008 to 2011 where he was responsible for the coordination of the Global Indirect Tax Service Lines.
Paul left Deloitte for Taxand in Amsterdam in 2011 as an attorney at law and joined Taxand Global VAT Compliance in The Hague in 2014.
Paul was listed for the Netherlands in the International Tax Review’s Indirect Tax Leaders Guide in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Paul has attained a university degree in General Taxation Law at the University of Amsterdam and specialized in Customs Duties and VAT at the University of Leiden. He also completed a post-master program at the University of Leiden on Tax Litigation.
